Multiples - Art without an Original
|
| "The Multiple produces
originals in series. This means that objects are not modeled after an original
but are original themselves. They are not just multiplied but are multiplied
in themselves" According to this key sentence which Daniel Spoerri and Karl
Gerstner expressed with the establishment of the Edition MAT (Multiplication
d'Art Transformable) in 1959 the Multiple is considered an art genre of its
own. Multiples are the expression of profaneness and democratization efforts
in fine arts using objects. A line originating from Marcel Duchamp (Ready-made
"Bottle Dryer" 1914), from which the edition MAT derived a name ("Multiples")
and a logistic, coined by Fluxus artists, made popular by Pop Art artists and
expanded by Joseph Beuys as a ramp for his "Vehicle to spread Ideas" and used
to create "social sculptures". Post Beuys Multiples continue to be valued and
used as "means of transportation for artists" (Beuys student Felix Droese).
Without an elitist nimbus, made popular by the media outside the feature pages
as well, they gain entrance into every day culture from where artists took them,
many times by reinterpreting a consumer industry product. (PF)
